Turkey’s President calls on UN General Assembly to use force to halt Israel’s attacks
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has stated that if the UN Security Council fails to stop Israel’s attacks on Lebanon and Gaza, the UN General Assembly should use force under the 1950 resolution to halt the assaults.
The Israeli army announced that on Tuesday morning, it launched a limited ground incursion targeting Hezbollah positions in villages near the Lebanon-Israel border.
Erdoğan, after a cabinet meeting in Ankara on Monday, emphasized that if the Security Council cannot demonstrate the necessary will, the UN General Assembly should swiftly authorize the use of force, as done under the 1950 “Uniting for Peace” resolution.
The 1950 resolution allows the UN General Assembly to intervene if disagreements among the five permanent veto-wielding members of the Security Council fail to maintain international peace.
The permanent members of the UN Security Council are the United Kingdom, China, France, Russia, and the United States.
President Erdoğan expressed his disappointment that Islamic countries are not taking an active stance to halt Israel’s attacks. He urged these nations to employ every possible political, economic, and diplomatic measure against Israel to force it into accepting a ceasefire.
Turkey, a NATO member, has condemned Israel’s attacks on Gaza and Lebanon and, in response, has suspended its trade relations with Israel.
The ongoing Israeli ground incursion into southern Lebanon is intensifying tensions in the region, with the potential for broader regional conflict as Hezbollah vows to defend its positions.
The escalation of tensions in the Middle East has sparked global concerns, particularly as other countries like Iran and Syria may be drawn into the conflict, increasing the risk of a regional war.
The current escalation in the Middle East, marked by Israel’s ground incursion into southern Lebanon, highlights the urgent need for global action to de-escalate the situation. Failure to resolve the conflict could lead to broader regional instability with severe humanitarian consequences.
The ongoing tensions also compound the plight of millions of people in the region, who are already facing severe hardships due to the protracted violence and instability. The international community must act swiftly to broker peace and ensure the protection of civilians in the region.
