Fake Rs 500 notes with Bollywood actor Anupam Kher’s photo instead of Gandhi worth Rs 1.6 Crore seized in Gujarat, India
Bollywood actor Anupam Kher was surprised to learn that counterfeit Rs 500 notes featuring his face instead of Mahatma Gandhi’s were discovered in Gujarat. The counterfeit notes were worth approximately Rs 1.6 crore.
Ahmedabad police seized the fake currency, which also displayed ‘Resole Bank of India’ instead of ‘Reserve Bank of India.’ Videos of the counterfeit notes circulated widely on social media, catching the public’s attention.
Anupam Kher shared a video of the counterfeit notes on X (formerly Twitter), humorously captioning it with, “My photo instead of Mahatma Gandhi’s on a ₹500 note??? Kuch bhi ho sakta hai (Anything can happen).”
The fake notes were discovered after a bullion trader, Mehul Thakkar, filed a complaint at Navrangpura police station on September 24, claiming he had been duped during a gold transaction.
Thakkar reported that his employee, Bharat Joshi, was approached by two men offering Rs 1.3 crore in cash for 2,100 grams of gold. The suspects promised to deliver the remaining Rs 30 lakh the next day.
Joshi delivered the gold to a temporary office set up by the suspects. After handing over the cash bundles, the men asked Joshi to count the money while they left, promising to return shortly with the balance.
As Joshi began counting the money, he discovered that all the notes were fake and featured Anupam Kher’s face instead of Mahatma Gandhi’s. The men had already vanished with the gold.
The police at Navrangpura station rely on CCTV footage to track the two suspects, who remain at large. They are working to identify and apprehend the culprits involved in this unusual crime.
A police officer described the case as “a unique instance of counterfeit currency with a Bollywood twist,” highlighting the peculiar use of Anupam Kher’s image on the fake notes.
The investigation continues, with authorities focusing on tracing the suspects using evidence from the CCTV footage and statements from the victims.
The police are actively investigating this unique counterfeit currency case featuring Anupam Kher’s image, using CCTV footage and other leads to track down the suspects and recover the stolen gold.
