APD responds to shooting at Austin Public Library
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department said it responded to a call for a shooting shortly after noon Saturday at the Austin Public Library downtown.
APD said one person was injured and taken to the hospital. KXAN was able to confirm the injuries were non-life-threatening.
At the time of the incident, APD said no suspects were in custody. Police described the suspect as a thin Black man who was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, green shorts, black pants, black shoes and two black bags.
At 1:26 p.m., APD said the suspect was taken into custody in south Austin.
"This was NOT an active shooter incident, but rather an isolated incident with one suspect and one victim," APD said.
According to police, the library was evacuated. A shelter-in-place for the area was initially sent out but has since been lifted.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson put out a statement related to the incident.
"I'm grateful to our Austin Public Library employees and our first responders for their immediate action to the shooting at our Central Library. Public spaces and city-owned facilities should be a safe place for everyone," Watson said.
