2 arrested in connection with Austin Amber Alert
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Two people were arrested, including a 32-year-old woman, in connection with an Amber Alert issued Tuesday night, according to the Austin Police Department.
Police identified the woman as Kayla Washington. She was arrested on kidnapping charges, as well as "an unrelated warrant." She was booked into the Travis County Jail, per a news release from APD.
The second person was identified by police as 28-year-old Avery Rider, who was arrested for resisting arrest.
Attorney details were not available for Rider or Washington as of Wednesday. KXAN will update this article if that changes.
The details began to unfold shortly after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when officers responded to a report about a missing infant from Child Protective Services (CPS).
According to police, CPS obtained a court order to remove the child, who was identified as 50-day-old Armani Woods, from Washington's care.
"The report stated that Washington absconded with the infant after learning that CPS was taking custody," the release said. "Officers began immediately checking all known locations for Kayla Washington."
Police said the APD Missing Person Unit was notified around 6:30 p.m. and began its investigation.
"Based on the information provided by CPS and investigating officers, the APD Missing Persons Unit issued an Amber Alert to help locate the child, identifying Washington as a suspect," police said.
Additionally, another person was "possibly assisting Washington." That person was later identified as Rider, according to police.
Police said shortly after the Amber Alert was issued, a vehicle was found near the 9000 block of North Lamar Boulevard. Officers responded to the area and found Washington walking on North Lamar Boulevard while "carrying an infant." The infant was identified as Armani Woods, police said.
"The child appeared unharmed and was evaluated by EMS on scene before being released to CPS custody," police said.
Rider was also found near the area by police and "was detained and later arrested for resisting arrest."
Police canceled the Amber Alert after the infant was "safely recovered" Tuesday night. No other details were available Wednesday.
