I have long been in the market for a tiny portable dishwasher and this week, I may finally pull the trigger. You see, I am so very blessed and fortunate to live alone in Manhattan—but my blessings come with significant tradeoffs. That is, my apartment is small. I have no room for many appliances, so I trek to the laundromat, borrow any necessary power tools from willing strangers on Nextdoor, and, most frustratingly, wash all my dishes by hand. A small dishwasher that could fit on a shelf would be ideal for me, but they are pretty expensive. (I already pay so much in rent!) It seemed like a far-away dream... until now.
The COMFEE dishwasher deal
When it comes to buying things to put in my home, I have two rules (though the first tends to supersede the second): Ideally, the item must be light pink to match my decor. In the absence or abundance of pink options, it must come highly recommended so I'm not wasting my money. During Amazon's Prime Day sale, there are no pink options (sad), but there is a well-rated one:
I have never heard of the COMFEE brand, so I spent some time comparing this one (which is just $219 right now) to its Farberware competitor ($246). I have heard of Farberware, which gave me a little confidence, but its ratings are just not as good.
Here's a breakdown of what the COMFEE dishwasher gets you:
Small footprint: It's 17.3" by 16.53" by 17.24".
Big capacity: It can wash up to 30 smaller items.
Ease of use: You can manually put water in its built-in tank or hook it straight to your faucet with an included hose.
Portability: It can be used in small apartments or on the go, like in an RV, because it doesn't need the sink hookup to function.
Six program choices: You can wash on a normal, rapid, steam, fruit, glass, or air refresh cycle.
High temps: There's also a hygiene setting that kicks the temp up to 192 degrees for maximum disinfecting.
Useful features: The shelves inside are adjustable and pull out on sliding rollers, plus there are tines inside that can fold down to hold things like plates in place.
What reviewers say
You and I are in the same boat right now as we consider buying this thing. Walk with me.
Reviewers say it's small, the hose attachment is extremely useful, and its two spinning water arms really do clean food and grime off your plates and other small goods. That said, like many dishwashers, it won't clean food that is super caked-on; you'll probably still have to do some pre-soaking. It's also plastic inside, so it'll require more thorough cleaning than a traditional, metal dishwasher might. Finally, cycles take a bit of time—like up to two hours—which is to be expected. It just doesn't have the power a built-in, real-deal dishwasher has. It has to take its time. That's fine by me. I'd rather outsource my dish-washing to a machine that takes two hours than spend 15 minutes doing it myself.
A lot of reviewers point out that it lasts a while, too. Even at the discounted price, I don't want to have to keep rebuying something over and over again. Four years seems to be about how long you can expect it to last, on average—and more if you're using it sporadically, like only when you go camping. I like to imagine I'll live in a bigger home in four years. Perhaps this will motivate me. I think I'm going to hit the buy now button.
