Think that IVF is a good and beneficial practice? Think again. According to American Life League’s Dwain Currier in a new video, “This technology is incredibly lethal for embryonic children in their most vulnerable state of human development.”

In fact, the IVF industry is responsible for more deaths each year than the abortion industry.

What is IVF? In vitro fertilization is a method by which a female’s eggs and a male’s sperm are collected in a physician’s office. The technician then manually attempts to fertilize the eggs with the sperm in a petri dish.

At that point, an unrepeatable human being begins to exist. This is not opinion. This is not a statement of faith. It is a fact. The science of embryology makes this clear.

While people on both sides of the political spectrum claim that IVF is “pro-family,” we know otherwise. IVF results in thousands of dead babies each year. It treats children like commodities. And it separates the marital act from the creation of a child. After babies are created from the IVF process, unwanted babies are frozen. Some are used in medical experiments. And others are simply discarded and thrown away. This is far from a pro-family value.

As Currier explains, IVF is wrong not just because it leads to the death of preborn babies. The entire process is wrong. He quotes the Vatican document Donum Vitae, which says, “Human procreation requires on the part of the spouses responsible collaboration with the fruitful love of God; the gift of human life must be actualized in marriage through the specific and exclusive acts of husband and wife, in accordance with the laws inscribed in their persons and in their union.”

Donum Vitae explains that IVF is contrary to this natural act and “entrusts the life and identity of the embryo into the power of doctors and biologists and establishes the domination of technology over the origin and destiny of the human person. Such a relationship of domination is in itself contrary to the dignity and equality that must be common to parents and children.”

In addition, IVF puts a price tag on a child. As Judie Brown, president of American Life League, once wrote, “No one has the right to a child—even the most loving of couples. IVF turns children into commodities.”

But God and the Church have compassion for those experiencing infertility. There are moral alternatives to this practice that offer hope to infertile couples.

One place of hope is the Saint Paul VI Institute for the Study of Human Reproduction. According to its website, its natural techniques “provide effective, morally acceptable, and sexually healthy options for women and couples” so that they can achieve a successful pregnancy. Using a technique called NaProTECHNOLOGY, the institute helps women find the underlying cause of their infertility.

And the good news is that NaProTECHNOLOGY has an even greater success rate than IVF. According to the St. Gianna’s Center for Women’s Health and Fertility Care, “NaProTECHNOLOGY treatment for infertility provided by the Pope Paul VI Institute, which includes surgical intervention by a fellowship trained NaPro Surgeon, has up to 80 percent effectiveness.” Contrast this to IVF. A 2023 Forbes article stated, “A 2022 study found that the clinical pregnancy rate for women under 30 who’d undergone an embryo transfer was 69.4%, whereas for women ages 40 to 43, that figure declined to 9.4%.”

So not only is IVF deadly for babies, but it’s less effective than natural and moral methods.

That’s why, when we hear statements like “IVF is pro-family,” we must have the moral courage to stand up—with compassion and love—and explain why this process is detrimental to families and children. We must share the truth about the procedure and the fact that parents have moral choices.

As the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith stated in the 2008 document Dignitas Personae, “The blithe acceptance of the enormous number of abortions involved in the process of in vitro fertilization vividly illustrates how the replacement of the conjugal act by a technical procedure—in addition to being in contradiction with the respect that is due to procreation as something that cannot be reduced to mere reproduction—leads to a weakening of the respect owed to every human being.”

As human beings, we have innate dignity, and all of our actions should reflect that dignity. We must respect every human being, from creation until death, without compromise and without apology. That means rejecting practices like IVF.
