Sports Briefs: Branson runners Sellers, Gidney in podium finish at Mariner
The Branson School’s Hailey Sellers and Maya Gidney finished 2-3, respectively, in the girls cross country championship race at the Mariner Invitational at Quarry Lakes Regional Recreational Area on Saturday. Sellers (18:03.3) was less than a minute behind the winner Ella Mogannam (17:07.0) of Lick-Wilmerding. Sellers and Gidney (18:39.2) both ran PRs on the 5,000-meter course.
Marin Catholic’s Katie McConneloug (21:18.4) placed 28th, followed closely by teammate Kate Patterson (21:47.1) in 35th.
San Marin sophomore Brooke Hohman (24:43.0) placed 16th in the Varsity Open race.
Boys cross country
San Marin High’s Jacob Gomez Nilsson (16:57.0) ran a PR to place16th in the 5,000-meter Varsity Open race at the Mariner Invitational at Quarry Lakes Regional Recreational Area on Saturday. Teammate Chase Cloney (17:39.3) placed 43rd, while the Marin Academy trio of Lachlan Williams (17:57.3), Asher Kastner (17:59.1) and James Tatum (17:59.3) placed 56-58th, respectively.
Men’s cross country
Dominican University senior Robert Dawson placed 28th in Saturday’s Bronco Invitational, running less than 2 minutes off the winning pace. Dawson finished the 8,000-meter race in 25 minutes, 55.7 seconds to lead the Penguins, who finished 10th in the standings. Sophomore Diego Montag (26:46.5) placed 66th.
Women’s cross country
Senior Sarah Chavez finished a split-second ahead of Dominican University teammate Sienna Fassett at Saturday’s Bronco Invitational. Chavez placed 72nd as she ran the 6,000-meter course in 25:24.9, with Fassett crossing the finish line in 74th at 25:35.2.
Girls tennis
The Branson School edged closer to locking up a top-three seed for the MCAL playoffs with Friday’s 7-0 victory over San Rafael. Katie Warren, Paloma Vano-Rice, Siena Yang and Xandra Sebastiani swept the singles ladder for Branson. The Bulls (10-4) are in a heated battled for third place with San Marin (8-5) heading into their showdown next week.
Girls water polo
Marin Academy went 1-1 during the second day of the Napa Tournament on Saturday, with a 12-3 victory over McClatchy in the morning before a 16-5 loss to Buchanan. The Wildcats (12-3, 6-1) are scheduled to play Archie Williams on Wednesday in a matchup that could have a major impact on the MCAL playoff seeding.
• San Marin rolled to a pair of victories in Saturday’s Mustang Rodeo Tournament. The Mustangs (16-4, 4-4) earned a 16-6 victory over Albany, then beat Lick-Wilmerding, 11-3.
• Tam High clawed out a 11-8 victory over a scrappy Santa Cruz squad in Saturday’s action at the Tri-Valley Tournament in Pleasanton. The Red-tailed Hawks (15-5, 7-1), looking to nail down the top seed for the MCAL playoffs, are scheduled to wrap up the regular season with a non-league game against Clayton Valley Charter on Tuesday and a MCAL match at Novato on Wednesday.
Boys water polo
San Marin (14-8, 4-4) scored a 12-8 victory over Buhach Colony before falling to Oregon’s Newberg High, 10-8, at the DeLong Invitational on Saturday. The Mustangs are scheduled to wrap up the regular season against San Rafael on Tuesday ahead of the MCAL playoffs.
Men’s soccer
Dominican University did all its damage in the first half and sailed to a 4-2 road victory over Jessup on Saturday. Anthoney Stainer, Freddie Allen, Alejandro Suarez-Amaya and Rolando Gonzalez each scored for the Penguins (4-6-1, 2-2-1 PacWest).
Women’s soccer
Dominican University got goals from Megan Clapinski and Janae Schwan and sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Salas Viniegra held tough as the Penguins (7-1-5, 3-1-1 PacWest) shut down Jessup, 2-0, on Saturday.
Women’s volleyball
College of Marin lost in straight sets to Uba on Friday, 25-22, 25-17, 26-24. The Mariners (8-12, 1-4 BVC) are scheduled to host Los Medanos on Wednesday.
