Sports Briefs: San Marin’s Shrestha second at NCS tennis
San Marin High’s Devanshi Shrestha lost to defending champion Monika Tekic of San Ramon Valley in the finals of the North Coast Section Division I singles tournament on Wednesday in Danville. Shrestha is the first NCS singles finalist since Tam’s Camilla Tarpey-Schwed in 2018.
Shrestha secured her title shot with a 6-1, 6-4 semifinal victory over Nashita Parukuri of Mission San Jose.
Tam High freshman Chloe Mouret-Lafage lost to Parukuri in the third-place match. Mouret-Lafage earlier lost to Tekic, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals.
Tarpey-Schwed reached the finals in 2018, but lost to Piedmont’s Angela Huang. San Marin’s Laura Posylkin, the 2009 and 2010 champion, was the last NCS winner from Marin County.
Boys basketball
Wyatt Tornello opened the season with a double-double as San Rafael High beat San Domenico, 53-45, on Tuesday night. Luke Shapiro and Will Healy combined fired 30 points for the Bulldogs (1-0), while Jax Aguillon added 10 points. Stephen Song led the Panthers (0-1) with 26 points as he hit six 3-pointers.
- Marin Academy opened the season with a 55-36 over Drew on Tuesday. The Wildcats (1-0) are scheduled to play at Ukiah on Friday.
Women’s basketball
Isabella Zepeda and Emily Sauers led College of Marin with 11 points each in the Mariners’ 75-63 loss to Chabot on Tuesday. Jaidyn Brown added 10 points for the Mariners (2-3), who are scheduled to host Diablo Valley on Thursday.
