London Waterloo platforms evacuated after fan heater triggers alarm

Several platforms have been evacuated at the UK’s fourth-biggest railway station after what was thought to have been a fire.

Rail passengers are facing disruption after four platforms were evacuated at London Waterloo.

The evacuation is impacting South Western Railway trains in and out of the capital through Clapham Junction, with platforms 20 to 24 closed while the incident was dealt with.

London Fire Brigade confirmed its crews were called to a smell of smoke at London Waterloo around 9.30am.

The brigade has since confirmed that there was no fire, and they have left the scene.

A spokesperson said: ‘We were called at around 9.30am today to reports of a smell of smoke at Waterloo station.

‘Crews investigated and were able to establish there was no fire.

‘The alarm is believed to have been caused by dust from a fan heater. We have now left the scene.’

Passengers are facing delays and cancellations while service recovers.
