Bin lorry crashes into Target store and injures six
A garbage truck struck a tractor-trailer and then crashed into a Target store, leaving a gaping hole and injuring six people.
The bin lorry apparently had just loaded rocks and dirt in North Bergen, New Jersey, and was traveling down a steep hill when the driver lost the brakes and control.
It went into Tonnelle Avenue and hit the tractor-trailer and then slammed onto the side of the Target around 2.30pm on Friday, WABC reported.
Among the victims, the most severely injured was a woman who was extricated from the Target restroom.
The bin lorry driver was also extricated and sustained minor injuries.
All the victims except one were transported to nearby hospitals. Two of the cases were serious, two moderate and two minor, 1010 WINS reported.
North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco said the incident was ‘devastating’.
‘We are committed to supporting the injured individuals and their families while working to understand what happened,’ he stated.
‘I also want to commend our emergency responders and responders from surrounding municipalities for their swift action and dedication to ensuring everyone’s safety.’
At least two tow trucks were pictured at the scene removing the bin lorry, which was partially inside the Target store.
Meanwhile, the tractor-trailer wound up by a utility pole nearby.
The tractor-trailer absorbed some of the impact and slowed the lorry down. Otherwise, the damage to the Target and injuries could have been worse, according to authorities.
As of 4pm, 70th Street was still blocked off to through traffic in both directions.
No charges have been filed amid an ongoing investigation.

A 10-year-old boy was struck and bleeding, and rushed to a hospital where he underwent a surgery.
