Popular Marks and Spencer food items recalled due to salmonella
An urgent ‘do not eat’ warning has been placed on batches of Marks and Spencer’s breaded chicken products over fears they contain salmonella.
The recall affects the supermarket’s Crispy Southern Fried Chicken Burgers and Chicken Kyivs being sold in Northern Ireland.
It comes after the bacteria – which can lead to life-threatening infections in extreme circumstances – was found in the foods during routine testing.
In a statement announcing the recall on Friday, the supermarket said: ‘Please do not consume these products.
‘Any customer in possession of these products can return them to their nearest store where they will be given a full refund.’
It explained that ‘no other products are affected’.
‘We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused,’ it added.
The recall relates to Crispy Southern Fried Chicken Burger products with use by dates of January 26, January 30, January 31 and February 1 2025.
Its 2 Chicken Kyivs with the use by date of January 26 2025 should also be returned.
The chain has since placed notices at points of sale to alert shoppers and is urging customers to check their products against the list.
Regulator the Food Standards Agency (FSA) shared news of the urgent recall.
In a statement, it said: ‘These batches of Marks and Spencer Crispy Southern Fried Chicken Burger and 2 Chicken Kyivs are being recalled due to the possible presence of salmonella.
‘People infected with salmonella typically develop symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after infection, but this can range between six and 72 hours.
‘The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which can sometimes be bloody. Other symptoms may include fever, headache and abdominal cramps.
‘The illness usually lasts four to seven days. Diarrhoea can occasionally be severe enough to require hospital admission.
‘The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.’
