Razor blade found hidden under Neo-Nazi sticker at Overground train station
A safety alert has been triggered at a suburban train station after a razor blade was discovered hidden under a far-right sticker on a sign.
The ‘British Movement’ sticker was being peeled off by a member of staff at Cheshunt station in Hertfordshire when they found the razor.
British Transport Police have launched an investigation into the incident following the grim discovery on Monday.
No one was injured by the blade.
A sign has now been placed in the station lobby alerting the public.
The station is on the Overground Weaver Line a major commuter route into Liverpool Street. Cheshunt is also on the Stansted Express route.
The warning sign says: ‘Whilst completing a check at Cheshunt station this morning, staff observed a British Movement sticker that had been placed on a platform sign.
‘When the member of staff went to remove the sticker they noted a secreted razor blade concealed behind the white circle part of the sticker.
‘There were no injuries caused and so far it seems to be an isolated incident.
‘The British Transport Police have been informed and will investigate to identify those responsible.
‘Please be careful when dealing with such circumstances.’
The British Movement is a neo Nazi group with roots going back to the 1960’s. It is known to promote violent activism.
While it is not known when the sticker was originally placed on the sign, it was found by station staff on Holocaust Memorial Day, which marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
It is not the first time that razor blades have been found concealed under Far Right flyers.
A bus stop near a primary school in Dunton Green, Kent, was targeted last year.
The stickers, covered with swastika symbols, had blades underneath.
The vice principal of nearby Dartford Technology College sent out a warning to parents about the stickers.
Deborah Ellis told Kent Online: ‘The school has received a message from Kent County Council regarding an abhorrent incident of vandalism, whereby extremist and racist stickers were attached to a bus stop that was very close to a primary school.
‘The worrying aggravating factor was that razor blades were slipped underneath the stickers, creating an injury risk when removing stickers.’
Inspector Matt Atkinson from Kent Police that it was only “sheer luck” that a child was not harmed by the concealed razor blades.
British Transport Police has been approached for comment.
