First picture of Ferrari driver who ex-PM’s bodyguards tried to save after fatal crash
Bodyguards for former Prime Minister David Cameron rushed to try and save a Ferrari driver who crashed on a Norfolk road last week.
Benjamin Gladman, 31, died at the scene when his red supercar veered off Bow Hill, a B-road on the outskirts of Marlingford, on January 25.
His female passenger was airlifted to hospital from the roadside and remains there in a serious but not life-threatening condition.
Lord Cameron, who most recently served as Rishi Sunak’s foreign secretary, was among the first to arrive following the incident as he was on a shooting weekend in the area.
The ex-PM’s security team attempted to help Gladman but the driver was later pronounced dead.
A source close to Lord Cameron said: ‘He feels huge sympathy with those involved and their families.
‘He is very proud of the protection team and the professionalism and dedication they showed.’
The Conservative peer, who was elevated to the House of Lords by Sunak in 2023 so he could serve in the cabinet, was attending the Great Melton shoot at nearby Marlingford Hall.
His former Eton school friend Nicholas Evans-Lombe owns the house and his family organises the shooting weekend.
Chef Geoff Mayer came across the crash site on his way home from work and said the Ferrari 360 appeared to be ‘snapped in half’.
He said: ‘I was trying to make sense of what I saw as I was coming around the corner. It was clear that it was a Ferrari in a bush. I was shocked.
‘I got closer and realised that it hadn’t just been left in the bush, but that a crash had just happened. The car was almost snapped in half.
‘I got out and the male was trying to speak to me. I couldn’t make sense of what he was saying, and the woman in the car was unconscious.’
Mr Mayer said he had been calling for help when a tractor and two Land Rover Discoveries pulled up behind him.
The team from one of the Land Rovers got out and told him they were ‘special unit police, undercover, and to tell the person on the phone that they were taking charge of the scene but that they still required emergency services’.
He watched the officers perform CPR on Mr Gladman, but knew he had died.
It was only later that he discovered the bodyguards were in the area as part of Lord Cameron’s entourage.
