British woman, 24, dies after suffering severe vomiting in hostel in Sri Lanka
A British woman has died after suddenly falling ill at a two-star hostel in the heart of Sri Lanka’s capital of Colombo.
The 24-year-old had been sharing a room at Miracle Colombo City Hostel with a German couple who have also been hospitalised.
The victim was taken to hospital but doctors could not do anything to save her and she was pronounced dead shortly after.
The Miracle Colombo City Hostel has since been shut after an emergency order by local police.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted once the woman’s family arrives to formally identify her remains.
Apart from vomiting, her symptoms remain unclear and the media reports from Colombo do not detail if her death is being treated as suspicious, Sri Lanka’s Daily News reported.
Police have also not shared why the hostel has been closed and what they are investigating.
Whatever the cause of the woman’s death, she is the latest British tourist to have died while on holiday in recent months.
It comes a month after a British woman and her South African fiancé died as a result of methanol poisoning in central Vietnam, according to police.
Greta Marie Otteson, 33, and Arno Els Quinton, 36, were discovered dead on Boxing Day at the Hoi An Silverbell Villa, a hotel they had run for almost a year.
Social media manager Greta was found on her bed while Arno’s body was in a room where he kept his musical instruments.
A British lawyer on holiday in Laos also fell victim to methanol poisoning that also killed five other tourists.
Simone White, from Orpington in Kent, is believed to have drunk poisoned Tiger Vodka and Tiger Whiskey at a bar in the popular backpacker town of Vang Vieng.
