Donald Trump bans transgender athletes from women’s sports and warns schools that disobey
President Donald Trump has signed an order barring transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports and issued a chilling warning to schools that disobey.
Trump’s executive order titled Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports directs US agencies to withdraw federal funding to any schools that do not comply.
Surrounded by dozens of young female athletes in uniform and women, Trump said: ‘From now on, women’s sports will be only for women.’
‘The radical left has waged an all out campaign to erase the very concept of biological sex and replace it with a militant transgender ideology,’ Trump said from the East Room of the White House on Wednesday afternoon.
‘With this executive order the war on women’s sports is over.’
The Republican president alleged that ‘men claiming to be girls’ have ‘stolen’ more than 3,500 victories and ‘invaded’ more than 11,000 competitions designed for women.
Trump said that a male cyclist posing as a woman competed in the Arizona Trail race won by nearly five-and-a-half hours, and that a man in women’s power lifting broke two world records and outlifted others by 440 pounds.
He also pushed the false claim that an Algerian female boxer at the Olympics in Paris over the summer was assigned male at birth.
The crowd of girls and women clapped and cheered as Trump held up the executive order with his signature.
Trump looked at a girl in front of him in the eyes and said, ‘Now you’re going to go out and win those events, right?’
The order is part of a ‘sweeping effort to reclaim our culture and our laws’, he said.
It directs the Department of Education to notify schools that letting trans athletes play in women’s sports violates Title IX, a federal law prohibiting sex discrimination on campuses. Violating that makes schools ineligible for federal funds.
‘With my action this afternoon, we’re putting every school receiving taxpayer dollars on notice that if you let men take over women’s sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will investigated for violations of Title IX and risk your federal funding,’ Trump warned.
‘There will be no federal funding.’
The order also directs administration officials to work with the International Olympic Committee and other sports governing organizations to make sure they comply outside of educational settings.
Trump made the issue central to his 2024 presidential campaign and touted delivering on it.
