MPs’ pay could be boosted by more than £2,500 to almost £94,000

MPs could be about to get a 2.8% pay rise, after an independent panel suggested a boost to their salary.

The move would mean MPs would earn just over £93,900 – up from the current salary of £91,346.

Cabinet ministers and other figures in the government get paid an extra amount on top of this, and business costs are also provided to every member in the House of Commons.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) announced the proposed increase today, following ‘a small-scale technical consultation with statutory consultees and stakeholders’.

If the body’s Board decides to go ahead with the recommendation, it would mean MPs’ salary has grown by almost £10,000 since 2022.

IPSA said: ‘MPs’ pay is a contentious topic, but we do a lot of research to enable us to make a decision that provides an appropriate salary for the responsibility and complexity of the role, while also safeguarding public money.

‘MPs’ salaries and pensions are the only remuneration MPs personally receive from us.’

The IPSA watchdog was set up in the wake of the expenses scandal in 2011, removing the power of MPs to set their own salary.

Chairman Richard Lloyd added: ‘Our pay proposal for 2025-26 reflects the experience of the wider working public sector population, and recognises both the vital role of MPs and the current economic climate.’

On top of the base salary, members with extra levels of responsibility get additional pay:

  • Prime Minister Keir Starmer gets £75,440
  • Cabinet Ministers like Angela Rayner and Wes Streeting get £67,505
  • Ministers of State like Chris Bryant and Anneliese Dodds get £31,680
  • Parliamentary Under-Secretaries of State like Jess Phillips get £22,375

A wider review of MPs’ salaries is also being carried out by IPSA, as it is obliged to do in the first year after an election.
