An increasing number of TfL staff are being attacked while they work at London stations, alarming figures have revealed.

More than 600 workers, who keep the London Underground and Overground network moving, were attacked in the past four years, TfL figures show.

Violent attacks against staff increased by 468% in the four years to 2024, workplace accident specialists have warned.

Four major London stations featured on top of the list for most attacks, while booking halls were identified as hotspots for violence targeting staff.

London Tube stations with most attacks

Here are the stations that saw the most assaults targeting staff between 2020 and 2024.

  • London Victoria Tube station – 25 assaults
  • Stratford – 18
  • Baker Street – 17
  • London Bridge – 17

Assaults have shot up from 56 in 2020/21 to 318 in 2023/24, Freedom of Information figures from TfL show.

There were 691 assaults between April 2020 and March last year.

Staff were left with serious injuries in five attacks in White City, Balham, Bounds Green, Swiss Cottage and Harrow-on-the-Hill between January 2022 and May 2023.

Most common locations for assaults were booking halls, which saw 280 incidents in the past four years. Twelve attacks took place at King’s Cross, London Bridge, and Victoria, and 10 at Stratford. Ten attacks at Ealing Broadway were recorded on the platform.

The TSSA union – said to be the biggest trade union for Transport for London staff – described the assaults as ‘completely unacceptable.’

Maryam Eslamdoust, the TSSA general secretary, told Metro: ‘The rise in violent assaults against transport workers is completely unacceptable. No one should face violence or abuse simply for doing their job. Enough is enough.

‘At TSSA, we have launched a campaign to eliminate violence against transport workers because too many of our members are experiencing horrific assaults and abuse.’

She called for more funding for the British Transport Police and an end to ‘lone working practices that put transport workers at greater risk,’ adding that the removal of ticket offices has ‘made things worse.’

Staff were injured in 2,560 incidents while working in and around stations – an average of 1.75 incidents a day. This includes 508 slips, trips and falls between April 2020 and March 2024.

It comes after Elizabeth line worker Jorge Ortega, 61, died after an attack at Ilford station on December 4. He suffered fatal head injuries in the attack and died in hospital.

His family described him as ‘the most loving person, the kindest soul you could have the pleasure of meeting.’

Ayodole Jamgbadi, 28, from Ilford, has been charged with murder and affray following the death.
