History was made on Saturday afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field in Queens. As the New York Mets broke out their City Connect jerseys, a beloved player, Pete Alonso, went into the record books. He was one home run shy of the 200th mark and he hit one over the right-center field wall for the milestone.
Alonso hit the home run with the Mets down 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The home run cut the Cardinals lead to 6-4. Alonso becomes the fourth Met in team history to reach the 200-home run plateau. He joins Mike Piazza (242), David Wright (220), and all-time Mets home run leader Darryl Strawberry (252) to achieve that feat. Alonso is now 20 home runs shy of tying Piazza.

Alonso hit his 200th home run in his 710th career game, making him the fourth-fastest player ever to reach 200 home runs. He was only behind Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner (706), Aaron Judge (671), and Ryan Howard (658). It’s the second time Alonso has made history at Citi Field in front of the hometown fans. Back in 2019, he set the rookie home run record (53) at Citi Field.
