Morning Briefing: Mets Begin Final Homestand of First Half
Good morning, Mets fans!
The Mets begin their final homestand of the first half tonight with the first of three games against the Nationals. José Quintana (3-5, 4.22 ERA) will match up against Jake Irvin (7-6, 2.80 ERA) for the second straight outing. The two hurlers matched zeros on July 4, with Irvin getting the win thanks to Jesse Winker‘s eighth-inning homer. Daniel Murphy will join Gary Cohen and Ron Darling in the SNY broadcast booth. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

Christian Scott allowed just one run and two hits over 5 2/3 innings, but Eric Orze and Adrian Houser combined to allow five two-out runs in the sixth inning as the Mets dropped their series finale with the Pirates, 8-2. Brandon Nimmo provided the lone spark for the Mets’ offense with a two-run homer off Mitch Keller. The Mets now sit 2.5 games back of the Padres for the third NL Wild Card spot.
Will Sammon of The Athletic reported Monday that Nimmo has voiced to Steve Cohen and David Stearns that the Mets should be buyers at this year’s trade deadline. After Monday’s loss, Nimmo said the team is taking positives from their 4-4 road trip, but acknowledges that they have let some games get away from them.
Former Mets bench coach Dave Jauss will once again pitch to Pete Alonso during this year’s Home Run Derby. Jauss threw to Alonso when he won the event back in 2021. Alonso also said that he plans on donating any winnings he earns from the derby to help youth baseball.
Drew Smith will undergo season-ending elbow surgery on Friday. Smith doesn’t know what kind of surgery it will be.

1969: Tom Seaver retires the first 25 batters he faces before Jimmy Qualls breaks up the perfect game with a one-out single in the ninth inning. Seaver fans 11 in the one-hit shutout as the Mets down the Cubs, 4-0 at Shea Stadium. Cleon Jones homers in support.
2000: Mike Hampton tosses seven shutout innings, and Armando Benítez records a six-out save as the Mets beat the Yankees at Shea Stadium, 2-0. Todd Zeile homers off Andy Pettitte in the winning effort.
2006: Trailing the Marlins 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Mets rally for four runs, capped off by a David Wright three-run homer. Billy Wagner allows a run but secures a 7-6 victory.
2018: Wilmer Flores becomes the Mets’ all-time leader in walk-off RBIs when he clubs a game-winning homer off Victor Arano in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 4-3 win over the Phillies. Tim Peterson earns the win out of the bullpen.
2022: The Mets retire Keith Hernandez‘s number 17 before their game against the Marlins. In the game, the Mets trail 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning when Tomás Nido‘s grounder sneaks under Brian Anderson‘s glove for a game-tying double. Brandon Nimmo then hits a comebacker, which Tanner Scott throws away, allowing Nido to score the winning run.
