Thursday, October 3, 2024 • 7:08 PM American Family Field • Milwaukee, WI LHP Jose Quintana (10-10, 3.75) vs. RHP Tobias Myers (9-6, 3.00) ESPN
The Mets have faced adversity all season. They have had crushing defeats throughout the season. When the 2024 Mets have been at their best, they rise up and fight back when their backs are against the wall. At the end of August when they had a stinging defeat in San Diego they responded with a blazing hot run that set up their postseason berth. When the Braves scored four runs to take the lead after the Mets scored six runs in game 161, the Mets roared back in the ninth to win.
Now the Mets find themselves in an elimination game on the road. Can the Grimace Mets reach back and find a little more “oomph” to keep the season going?
The Mets turn to Jose Quintana to get things started tonight. Over 170 1/3 innings this season he has a 3.75 ERA, 4.56 FIP, 1.250 WHIP, and a 105 ERA+. His last start was against the Brewers where he held them to two runs over 4 1/3 innings while striking out nine. In his last six games, Quintana has allowed four runs, three earned over 36 1/3 innings (0.74 ERA, 2.48 FIP). The Brewers have the following career numbers against Quintana:
The Mets will get another look at Tobias Myers tonight. The rookie has pitched 138 innings over 27 games this season (25 starts) with a 3.00 ERA, 3.91 FIP, 1.174 WHIP, and a 140 ERA+. His last start was against the Mets where he held the Mets to one hit and nothing else over four innings. Since August 15th he has a 3.45 ERA, 3.51 FIP over 44 1/3 innings. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:
Edwin Díaz is “definitely better than yesterday”, Carlos Mendoza said during his pregame media scrum. Mendoza hinted that Díaz could be used for more than three outs. Díaz was only available for a maximum of four outs on Wednesday, which is why he wasn’t brought in for the eighth inning.
According to OptaStats, the Mets are going to be the first team in MLB history to play five games in four days, including at least three postseason games.
Three Things To Watch For
Remembering what got the Mets here. The Mets’ success this season has been their bats. There is power spread through the lineup and the team as a whole has hit the sixth most home runs in the league despite no individual player having more than 35 home runs. The Mets have hit 0 home runs over the last two games and looking at the Mets Wednesday after the second inning, you wouldn’t know that their lineup has been their strength. Will someone step up to be the hero tonight?
Starling Marte. Marte has come roaring back when the Mets have needed him most. In this series, he has gone 2-for-5 at the plate. Tuesday he scored a key run. Monday he had a sacrifice fly and a walk. In game 161 against the Braves he came on during the 8th inning and went 2-for-2 scoring two runs.
All hands on deck in the bullpen. Phil Maton had pitched in some critical moments for the Mets throughout the weekend, but last night might have been a step too far, coming in for a fourth time in five days. Similar to how the Brewers last night emptied out their bullpen, using all of their stars starting in the fifth inning, expect the Mets to push Díaz and Buttó tonight. If Peterson doesn’t do his mid-start bullpen session before the game he should be available as well.
