1/31/2025: A messy mix of freezing rain, rain, snow
The latest Storm Tracker Forecast from meteorologists Matt Mackie and Kevin Appleby:
After a quiet start to the morning commute, a mix of rain, snow and freezing rain moves into much of our area by 8, 9, or 10 AM.
Precipitation will be light and spotty, but many spots are right on the line in terms of temperature - not too far above or below the freezing mark. That means light snow and light glazes of ice are possible for the tail end of the morning commute.
It doesn't take much ice to make sidewalks and roads hazardous! Most of our area is under a winter weather advisory through the early afternoon.
The middle of the day will feature temperatures in the mid to upper 30's in the Capital District, meaning mostly plain rain is expected. Miserable to be outside in, but hopefully less slick and slippery. Up north in the Adirondacks, parts of the North Country, and parts of Vermont, it may be cold enough to support more consistent snow through the day.
This evening, as temperatures drop back below freezing, most of the rest of our area will see at least a brief transition back to snow as this system exits.
Totals will range from a coating in parts of the Mid-Hudson Valley, to 1-3" along the Northway from Albany north, to 3-5" in parts of the northern Berkshires, southern Green Mountains, the Taconic Hills, and many spots west of Schenectady.
Cold and a bit breezy tomorrow, with temperatures only in the mid 20's at their warmest. A few snow showers are possible the second half of Sunday, turning to rain in most areas for Monday.
The pattern repeats itself for the end of the forecast period - after another cool and dry day Tuesday, snow showers are possible Wednesday, followed by rain showers Thursday.
