Windham works to fix water main break near Church Street
WINDHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A water main break at the intersection of Church Street in Windham is affecting water services for several residents and businesses. Town officials said in a Facebook post that properties between Mill Street and Hickory Hill Road may have disrupted service.
Town Supervisor Thomas Hoyt said the town's 200,000-gallon water tank had 50,000 gallons left when the break was isolated. Hoyt estimates the tank lost 300 gallons a minute of water before they located the break.
Hoyt said repairs might take longer than expected with the winter weather, breaking through the blacktop and getting through a couple of feet of frost. Hoyt also spoke with Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School District Superintendent John Wiktorko, who said the water main break and snowstorm contributed to the district's closure on Thursday.
Because of the snow, the town hired an outside company to make the repairs as the Department of Public Works crews tended to plow snow-covered roads. Stay with NEWS10 as more information becomes available.
