A new resolution proposed by the Rensselaer County Legislature would revoke the operating permit of the Dunn Landfill. Also, protests were held nationwide on Wednesday, with some in Albany. These stories, and more, are in your five things to know this Thursday.

1. New resolution aims to revoke Dunn Landfill permit

The Rensselaer County Legislature is proposing a new resolution to revisit and revoke the operating permit of the controversial Dunn Landfill. If adopted, the resolution would request that the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and Gov. Kathy Hochul reconsider their December 2024 permit renewal for the landfill.

2. Protests held nationwide against president, Elon Musk

Multiple groups rallied Wednesday in opposition to Pres. Donald Trump and his administration. The protests were held in conjunction with multiple protests happening in every state capital across the country.

3. Bennington Co. fire that killed mom, newborn ruled accidental

The New Year’s Day fire in Sandgate that killed a mom and newborn has been deemed accidental, Vermont State Police reported on Wednesday. Two others had also been injured in the Jan. 1 fire.

4. Greg Gattuso leaving UAlbany football after 11 years

After 11 years leading the UAlbany football program, Greg Gattuso is stepping down as the Head Coach of the Great Danes to return to his alma mater, Penn State, where he played defensive line from 1981-1983. Gattuso will be joining the Nittany Lions as a defensive analyst and defensive line coach.

5. Special meeting for Pittsfield City and school leadership on child sex abuse prevention

The City of Pittsfield leadership and the school committee will be deciding on training for students, parents and staff regarding inappropriate relationships. Two administrators are on administrative leave relating to sexual misconduct charges.
