Saratoga Co. sergeant rescues owl during winter storm
SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A Saratoga County sergeant rescued an injured barred owl during last weekend's winter storm. Sergeant Yetto of the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office transported the bird to North Country Wild Care for rehabilitation.
The owl has since passed away from its injuries. However, its legacy will continue, North Country Wild Care said.
The rehabilitation center is currently caring for another owl with damaged feathers. In a method called "imping," the rehabilitators plan to use the feathers from the deceased owl to repair the other's broken ones.
To do so, the rehabilitators will attach the donor feathers to the shafts of the recovering owl's damaged feathers. According to the facility, this technique "significantly" speeds up the rehabilitation process, helping the recovering owl regain proper flight without having to fully shed and regrow its feathers.
"This owl's feathers will now help another regain its strength and return to the wild," North County Wild Care said.
