Memorial events honor NY National Guard members killed in 2024 helicopter crash
ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Memorial events were held this weekend to honor the lives of two New York National Guard members killed one year ago in a helicopter crash. On March 8, 2024, Chief Warrant Officers 2 John Grassia III of Rotterdam and Casey Frankoski of Rensselaer lost their lives while patrolling the US-Mexico border in Texas.
On Saturday, the Grassia family held a memorial service at Saratoga National Cemetery and a celebration of life at the Knights of Columbia in Saratoga. They were reportedly joined by friends, community members and New York State Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara.
"The Grassia family would like to thank all who came out to honor our heroes," the family said in a press release. "This has been a very difficult year and the love and support given during this time is greatly appreciated."
During the service reception, Assemblyman Santabarbara presented the Grassia family with a New York State Assembly Proclamation, which recognized 30-year-old Grassia for his service contributions and ongoing legacy.
"John Michael Grassia III was a true example of service and sacrifice," Santabarbara said. "His impact will be felt for generations, and we will always honor his memory."
On Sunday, a memorial brunch was held for Frankoski at Arsenal City Tavern in Watervliet. Local musician Nelson VanDenburgh performed at the event. All proceeds from Black Cherry White Claw sales were donated to the Casey Frankoski Memorial Fund.
In January, a Rensselaer County bridge was renamed in honor of 28-year-old Frankoski. Now called the "CW2 Casey N. Frankoski Memorial Bridge," the bridge spans Washington Avenue over the I-90 Thruway.
In addition to Grassia and Frankoski, the weekend's memorial events also served as a recognition of Border Patrol Agent Chris Luna, who also died in the crash, and Jacob Pratt of Rensselaer, who survived the crash and is in recovery from his injuries.
"Their service will never be forgotten, and thoughts remain with Jacob Pratt as he continues his recovery," a press release for Saturday's memorial celebration said.
