Construction begins on popular Lake George landmark
LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A major upgrade is coming to a Lake George landmark more than a year after it was destroyed by a fire. This project is part of New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. State and local leaders gathered at Shepard Park to announce that they are breaking ground on a brand-new amphitheater.
That fire happened early in the morning on June 30 in 2024. Crews were called around 4 a.m. when the fire tore through the amphitheater bandstand.
“I want to thank everyone who had rushed to our aid, rushed to assist us in any manner, all sides of the aisle," said Ray Perry, Mayor of Lake George.
Fortunately, no one was hurt and investigators later determined the cause was likely an electrical issue. Fast forward 16 months later, work on the amphitheater has begun.
According to the Warren County Capital Improvement Request, the cost for the project will be $2.5 million. DRI awarded $1.5 million specifically towards reconstructing the Shepard Park amphitheater and bandstand. The state will pick up the rest of the cost.
“This is an initiative that is a commitment by the community and for the community to restore Lake George status as a region where events and musical happenings is a destination for so many. But we're also creating an inviting recreational space for residents and visitors alike,” said Secretary of State Walter Mosley.
Officials say the more than 100-year-old amphitheater will be modernized and will feature updated seating, improved accessibility, upgraded lighting and sound, and a community space in the lower level.
The project is expected to wrap up by spring 2026. Just in time for next year’s concert season.
