HUDSON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Early voting for the November General Election gets underway on Saturday, October 25. Three candidates are vying for the office of mayor.
One of them is Democrat Joseph Ferris. He defeated the current mayor in the June democratic primary, but Kamal Johnson is still running for re-election. Only this time, it's with the Working Families Party.
Ferris says earning trust in city government is his top priority, including cracking down on people who don't pay their property taxes. He says there are two sides to this situation. One is the collection process.
"If people see that city government isn't doing what they're supposed to be doing, they're going to lose trust in city hall and their elected officials," said Ferris. He adds the second part of that story is, "not wanting to kick people out of their homes, not displacing them. Honestly, if the city were more proactive in reaching out to individuals and families that are struggling in that situation, the lower the penalties will be."
Ferris sat down with NEWS10 to discuss the issues facing Hudson. The other candidate in the race is Republican Lloyd Koedding. Efforts to contact Koedding to do an interview were unsuccessful.
