NST Leader: A haven for foreign illegal businesses?
THE 10 Bangladeshi-run clinics shut down in the Klang Valley on Thursday in a joint operation by the Immigration Department and Health Ministry point to a larger problem: Malaysia is becoming a haven for illegal businesses run by foreigners. E-waste factories, plastic waste plants, durian orchards, vegetable farms, rare earth leases. You name it, foreigners are in it. A number of enabling factors are at work, facilitating such illegal activities. First, there are gaps in the regulatory governance system as a whole. Syndicates, both local and foreign, are exploiting the gaps to their advantage. The Treasury loses in a big way in this sleazy game of smugglers and corrupt civil servants. Do not go blaming money for this state of affairs. The fault lies in the insatiable need for money.
