NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- New Jersey drivers may get a tax break if two senators get their way.
A bipartisan bill introduced earlier this year seeks to give tax write offs to drivers who spend $1,000 on E-ZPass tolls.
The proposal by Senators James W. Holzapfel and Patrick J. Diegnan, Jr. was submitted to the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee on Jan. 11, but hasn’t moved up the latter since. It was originally intended to help ease the financial burden on commuters after recent increases on gas taxes in New Jersey, as the bill states.
“By providing toll-paying commuters with a way to offset a portion of their costs, this bill recognizes that these individuals are paying more than their fair share of the burden of maintaining safe, modern, and ample roadways in the State,” the bill reads.
It’s the latest attempt from senators to help cut costs for Garden state drivers, something they’ve been working towards since 2016.
If signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy, New Jersey would be the third state to offer a tax break to commuters following West Virginia and Massachusetts.
