Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani makes announcement after election win

CORONA, Queens (PIX11)-- After catapulting to victory in the New York City mayoral race, mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced the members of his transition team on Wednesday morning.

The democratic socialist made his address in front of the Unisphere at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the borough where he served as an assemblymember.

Among the members of his advisory team are Elana Leopold, who worked under former Mayor Bill de Blasio, Maria Torres-Springer, the former first deputy mayor to Eric Adams, Grace Bonilla, the president and CEO of United Way, and Melanie Hartzog, the former deputy mayor for the Department of Health and Human Services.

At 34-years-old, Mamdani is the youngest person to be elected mayor of New York City in over a century and the city’s first Muslim mayor.

Mamdani beat out former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa while campaigning on affordability, free buses, universal child care, and a rent freeze for stabilized units. 

During his victory speech on Tuesday, Mamdani thanked the next generation of New Yorkers and promised to ring in a new age for New York City.

“Because of you, we will make this city one that working people can love and live in again,” he said.
