Former U.S. prosecutor Joyce Vance says that the differences between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and President Joe Biden could not be more stark following Biden’s speech Wednesday reiterating his reasons for stepping down from his campaign.
Biden spoke for the first time on television Wednesday after being diagnosed with COVID-19 and stepping out of the presidential race. In an impassioned speech, Biden said that despite his reverence for the office, “the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation."
Meanwhile, at his first public rally Wednesday since the attempt on his life, Trump doubled down on attacking Democrats.
"If you don’t mind, I’m not going to be nice," Trump said, to boisterous applause.
“Joe Biden has sacrificed his own hopes and dreams in order to serve all of us, to serve the country, one last time,” Vance wrote in her "Civil Discourse" newsletter Wednesday night. “The contrast between Trump and Biden could not be any sharper.”
Vance pointed out the spike in voter registration since Kamala Harris gained the Democratic nomination, noting that convincing younger voters to come out in November will be one of the party’s biggest assets. The Democrats, after all, are the party of inclusion, with a door open to all.
“In the big tent of the Democratic Party, there is room for everyone,” Vance wrote. “Whether you’re young yourself or someone who cares about young people and young voters, join the call.”
