'You lose me': Ex-GOP senator from top swing state won't support Trump

Former Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) will not be throwing former President Donald Trump a lifeline in a key swing state this election.

Appearing on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Tuesday, Toomey said he could not support the Republican nominee this year despite the fact that he also said he cannot vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Toomey emphasized that he voted for Trump in both 2016 and 2020, but he then explained why he couldn't do so this time around.

"When you lose an election and try to overturn the results and try to stay in power, you lose me at that point," said Toomey.

Toomey, who was one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump at his second impeachment trial, was then pressed on if this meant that he preferred Harris over Trump.

"I acknowledge that the outcome is a binary situation, but my choice is not," Toomey said. "It is an acceptable position for me to say neither of these candidates can be my choice for president."

Toomey's home state of Pennsylvania is shaping up to be the key swing state in the 2024 presidential race, as polls show a very tight contrast between Trump and Harris.

In theory, an endorsement from Toomey, who won statewide election in both 2010 and 2016, could bring over voters that Trump needs to win the state, which he won in 2016 before losing it in 2020 to President Joe Biden.
