Former first lady Melania Trump accused Democrats of waging "lawfare" against her husband and triggering attempts on his life during a rare public interview Tuesday evening on Fox News' "The Five," as she promoted her upcoming memoir.
"I have so many questions, but I will start with one that is clearly serious," said co-host Jeanine Pirro. "The former president has survived two assassination attempts. And Kamala's camp just issued yesterday that they are going to go more negative. The Biden-Harris team continues with the negative rhetoric, whether it's 'Hitler' or he's 'tearing down democracy.' Are you worried about your husband's safety in the next 29 days?"
"Of course, I do," said the former first lady. "When they call him a threat to democracy, let's ask ourselves, who is really a threat to democracy? They're ongoing with lawfare against the former president, as well as trying to get him off the voting ballot, and trying to silence him."
"Yes, of course, I was always afraid of what could happen," she continued. "Continuing with that kind of language, it is toxic, a toxic atmosphere."
Trump and his supporters have repeatedly blamed Democratic "rhetoric" for the assassination plots against him, though there's no indication either of the two people who tried to attack him particularly supported the Democratic campaign, and even though Trump himself has promoted violent language against his opponents constantly, in addition to inciting a violent riot against Congress in 2021.
Melania's memoir sparked a great deal of interest in large part due to her breaking from her husband on abortion rights — something she went on to praise him for allowing her to do.
