Denver Nuggets vs. Portland Trail Blazers News and Notes

The Blazers can control their own destiny and get a guaranteed playoff series with a win, while Denver can grab the third seed with a victory but doesn’t seem all that interested in the higher spot. 

The Nuggets are giant road dogs against Portland, with the number getting bigger and bigger on Sunday. Sharp money is betting Denver will rest or at least limit their starters’ minutes in Portland, especially Nikola Jokic.

The run-away favorite at FanDuel’s Sportsbook to win the NBA MVP at -6000 has already seen a decrease in court time, but it hasn’t really hurt his production. Jokic triple-doubled, scoring 20 points and adding game-highs with 15 boards and 11 assists in just over 26 minutes on Friday’s win in Detroit. 

Markus Howard also had 20 for the Nuggs in a game Aaron Gordon, Facundo Campazzo, and Paul Millsap all rested. 

The Nuggets can finish no worse than fourth after winning three straight and nine of their past 12 games. They seem content there as a win against a team they’ve already gone 2-for-2 against this season would clinch third. It appears Denver will play on the side of rest and caution when they face a fully loaded and motivated Blazers squad on Sunday.

Portland is fighting to stay out of the play-in round and an opening game against the red-hot Warriors. The Blazers will finish in the five or six seed with their first win over Denver this season. If they can’t get it done, they need help from their rival, the Lakers. LA, who are -8 point road favorites, would have to lose to a Pelicans team without starters Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Steven Adams, and others.

The Blazers lost a heartbreaker in Phoenix in their opportunity to make Sunday’s game a rest day. Norm Powell fouled Devin Booker with 2.4 seconds left with a one-point lead over the Suns on Thursday. Booker hit both free throws, and the Blazers’ five-game win streak and guaranteed playoff spot went up in smoke for the time being. 

Damian Lillard put up a game-high 41 points in the bitter loss, which was just Portland’s second setback in 11 games. It was Dame’s seventh straight game with at least 30. 

CJ McCollum added 27 in the loss while Robert Covington had 16 but missed a pair of free throws late, which set up Booker’s game-winning foul shot. 

Denver has failed to cover six of seven against teams with a winning home record, while Portland is 1-6 ATS as a home favorite. Portland has covered five in a row against teams with a .600-plus winning percentage, while the Nuggs have covered two straight. The under has been the play in 14 of 17 Denver road games while Portland has gone low in four of five. Denver has covered six of eight in Oregon, where the over is 5-2 in their past seven head-to-heads.
