NFL Today: Merry Christmas, KC
This week, we learned that KC and Denver will square off on Christmas Day, marking the third straight year the Chiefs will play on X-Mas; former Charger and current free agent CB Asante Samuel Jr. plans to wait before signing with anyone; and Cincy DE Trey Hendrickson says the team has stopped talking about a new deal with him and a holdout seems to be imminent. Other Fantasy football related stories we’re tracking include…
Jets Enjoy Strong Draft
After back-to-back seven-win campaigns, the New York Jets sunk to just five wins last season, marking a ninth straight losing record. It’s been 15 years since this was a playoff team, yet the NFL still thinks enough of the Jets to reward them with a game in London, England this season. New York will head overseas to take on Denver in a Week Six matchup in mid-October.
So what happened to the Jets last year? For starters, their rush attack was putrid (31st overall) and they struggled to force turnovers, finishing 30th in takeaways per game. On the plus side, the pass D was very strong.
More good news? The Jets had a strong draft, starting off with landing an offensive lineman (Armand Membou, considered by many to be the top tackle available) for the second straight year, and then choosing TE Mason Taylor in the second round, a pick that everyone seems to love, and one with interesting Fantasy ramifications.
The improved line should provide a nice boost to New York’s run game, and with Justin Fields now under centre that’s a smart approach.
More good news? The Jets’ schedule is among the NFL’s easier ones, with a .460 opponents’ winning percentage – the lowest the team has faced since 2008.
Carolina Gives Bryce Young More Weapons
After bottoming out with just two wins in 2023, the Carolina Panthers more than doubled that to five victories last year. Baby steps, right?
Still, with an offense that was dead last in scoring and a defense that gave up the most yards in the league, the Cats needed help everywhere. Fortunately, they absolutely nailed it in the draft, headlined by eighth overall pick, Tetairoa McMillan, a wide receiver out of Arizona.
Later, Carolina continued to add to its WR room, grabbing Jimmy Horn Jr. with its sixth round pick, but all eyes will be on McMillan, who is currently +1000 to win AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2025-26 as per FanDuel.
TMac — as he is known by the cool kids — is expected to become a good starting WR within a couple of years based on his impressive productivity in his three seasons with the Wildcats, but his routes could use a bit more conviction and polish. From a Fantasy perspective, he really landed in the right place given Carolina’s lack of a real WR1. Obviously, it will really help McMillan if Bryce Young can show some improvement, because at this stage their Fantasy fates are linked.
So, McMillan (often compared to George Pickens) could struggle in Year One, but he could also be among the top three rookies in Fantasy scoring. At this point, McMillan is a far more attractive asset in Dynasty formats.
RotoRob Tune of the Day
Bjork may come across as a freakazoid in public, but she’s a brilliant musician. Here’s “New World,” a track from the 2000 movie she starred in, Dancer in the Dark.
