NBA Today: Boston’s Scoring Woes
This week, the Golden State Warriors lost Stephen Curry (hamstring), who will miss at least a week; Tyrese Haliburton did it again, nailing a game-winning trey with 1.1 seconds left to give Indy a 2-0 lead over Cleveland; and Boston’s Jrue Holiday won this season’s Social Justice Champion award. Other Fantasy basketball stories we’re following include…
Derrick White Getting Big Touches
While many (and quite justifiably) believed that the Boston Celtics’ late-game scoring woes in Game One were an outlier, they once again reared their ugly head in the followup.
After being held to 16 points by the Knicks in the fourth quarter in the opener, Boston didn’t exactly light it up down the stretch in Game Two, managing just 17 points in the last stanza. And now, thanks to blowing 20-point leads in both games, the Celtics find themselves down 2-0 and heading to New York. Uh oh.
Both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have massively struggled with their shooting so far in this series, leaving Derrick White to get far more shots than usual. And while White’s surface numbers look good (double-double in Game One, and a team-high tying 20 points with nine boards and five assists in Game Two), his shooting has also been substandard. He’s put up a shocking 35 shots in this series – 27 from beyond the arc – and sunk just a dozen (eight from downtown) — and he looked pretty angry after the second loss. Combine that with the cold shooting from Tatum and Brown, and you understand why Boston finds itself in a world of trouble right now.
When White was dealt to Boston, no one thought too much about it, but he has gotten better and better each season since, as a rebounder and especially as a source of treys.
He stayed healthier this season, leading to a career-finest effort. White is so valuable given that he’s able to run the offense or play as an off-ball guard, he can score and distribute, and is stellar defensively (except when he’s getting posterized; see video below) as a rare backcourt player capable of racking up a goodly amount of blocks.
Jamal Murray’s Scoring Down
Coming off their championship in 2022-23, the Denver Nuggets won 57 games last season, yet were knocked out in the Western Conference semifinals. This season, Denver slipped to 50 wins – its lowest total since 2021-22, but are back in the conference semis and managed to take away home court advantage against OKC.
Yes, the Nuggets were absolutely bitch-slapped by the Thunder in Game Two on Wednesday night, but getting a split on the road is a big win.
Veteran point guard Jamal Murray, who has struggled to stay healthy in recent seasons, has been relatively quiet lately, failing to top 21 points in any of the last four games. He’s hauled in more rebounds than usual, but has been inconsistent with his assists.
One good sign for Murray was that his three-point game was cooking in Game Two (3-for-5). He somewhat struggled from deep from March on, so we’ll need to see more of this for Denver to have a chance to upset Oklahoma City.
Still, Murray had a fantastic season, setting personal highs in MPG, field goal attempts, free throws made and attempted, steals and points, so it’s no wonder that he’s a slam dunk to reach double-digit points in Game Three on Friday (-5000 as per FanDuel).
Waiver Wire Pick of the Week
Mike Conley Jr., PG, Minnesota Timberwolves (ESPN: 31.2 per cent; CBS: 40 per cent): The oft-injured Conley’s best asset these days is his name recognition, but if you’re desperate for assists, he’s getting a little extra burn with rookie Rob Dillingham (ankle) still out. Conley isn’t just fragile, he’s old (37), but can still facilitate, dropping five dimes in Game One. Don’t expect much scoring, but he’ll also help in steals, treys and FT percentage. Conley is nearly ready to be set adrift on an ice floe, but don’t bet against him just yet.
RotoRob Tune of the Day
American disco/funk gods KC and the Sunshine Band started in 1973, were active until 1984 and then reunited in 1991 and have been at it since. In 1976, they had a few singles off their fourth album (Part 3) including “Boogie Man.” The single’s B-side was “Wrap Your Arms Around Me,” which would later be the album’s fifth single and experience some chart success.
