Pete Davidson Reveals the ‘Best’ Parenting Tip He Got From an A-List Celebrity

When someone has a new baby, it’s tempting to info dump on them: “Sleep when the baby sleeps!”, “Bassinets aren’t necessary,” “Introduce them to all the foods.” But at the end of the day, the only thing new parents truly need is the space to figure it out on their own — without anyone else’s (well-meaning) opinion getting in the way. New dad Pete Davidson learned this when an A-list celebrity gave him the “best” parenting tip he’d ever heard, and we love it!

The Saturday Night Live alum chatted about his daughter Scottie Rose, 1 month, who he shares with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt, on an appearance on The Late Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“All the cliches are true,” Davidson told host Jimmy Fallon. “It’s so much fun. It’s nuts!”

After gushing about his daughter and his girlfriend, Davidson quipped, “They crap so much. They crap while they’re crapping,” making Fallon laugh. “Then you’ll put ointment on, and then they’ll be like, ‘psych!’ and then crap again.”

Later, Fallon asked if he got any advice from people, and Davidson shared that it happens “tons.” “People that you don’t even know,” Davidson continued. “Like you’ll be at the store, they’ll be like, ‘Hey, you gotta kid? Hey, you gotta do this. You gotta do that.’ But everyone’s been really nice.”

His favorite advice came from none other than Eddie Murphy. “The best advice I actually got, and I hate — it’s so name-droppy — but Eddie Murphy gave me great advice,” Davidson said. “Because I asked him for advice. And he goes, ‘The best advice is no advice. You can’t tell another man how to raise his child,’” in the perfect impression of The Pickup star.

Fallon laughed, saying, “He’s smart! That is correct advice, Eddie!”

Murphy would know; after all, he’s a dad of 10 kids! In an interview with PEOPLE in November, the Shrek star said, “My superpower is that I am always, always present. Talk to one of my kids any time of day and ask, ‘Where’s your dad right now?’ and they can look at their watch and tell you literally what part of the house I’m in. Dad is always present and always has been.” That’s another good piece of advice, too!

Prior to welcoming daughter Scottie in December, another famous friend offered Davidson advice: Machine Gun Kelly. “He’s the best dad ever,” Davidson said of the rapper, who is dad to 16-year-old daughter Casie with ex Emma Cannon and daughter Saga, 9 months, with Megan Fox.

Davidson told PEOPLE, “He flies back and forth to Cleveland twice a week just to see his daughter [Masie] play volleyball. And he’s just always with his kids, and it’s just such a beautiful thing to see. It’s his favorite thing. And he’s like, ‘This is going to be your favorite thing.’ So I’m really excited.”

Based on the way Davidson was glowing talking about his daughter in this latest interview, we can tell parenting already is his favorite thing.
