The Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) noted a redeployment of Ukrainian forces, regarding it as a preparation for hostilities.
This announcement comes several days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shuffled around the military leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF), and specifically the commander of the Donbass operation.
The statement by the DPR, released on August 6th, is the following:
“Our intelligence obtained information on preparation and deployment to the front positions of units and subunits of the reserve of the UAF towards Mariupol.
According to data obtained from the headquarters of the invaders [Ukraine], as well as from local residents of the settlements occupied by the UAF in the south of Donetsk region, we received information regarding the firing positions of the 152-mm and 122-mm artillery installations of the 406th artillery brigade of the Navy in the areas of TERNOE, KIROVO, ANDREYEVKA.
The reserve units of the 36th and 35th Marine Brigades advanced to the front and were deployed into battle formations.
In MARIUPOL, the Azov [“Volunteer” Battalion] and the units of the 56th motorized infantry brigade remaining at their permanent deployment positions were raised on alarm. The invaders [Ukraine] moved to the concentration area in the north of the city, ready to arrive at the forefront.
In addition, along the contact line, there is an increased activity of enemy unmanned aerial vehicles, conducting air reconnaissance. So far, our defenders have destroyed TWO invader UAVs.
We regard such actions of the Ukrainian side as direct preparation for active hostilities against our Republic.
We do not exclude the possibility that in the near future the Ukrainian invaders will carry out terrorist acts near the front line in order to create an occasion to launch an offensive, the victims of which will be UAF fighters or civilians.
We do not need any more bloodshed in the Donbass!”
The following is an earlier map presenting the reported positions and potential vectors of offensive, approximately 90,000 fighters are presumed to be deployed.
It should be reminded that on August 5th at the contact line in the Donbass a group of Ukrainian military personnel blew up while attempting an unauthorized dismantling of metal structures on the territory of one of the mines.
“Two Ukrainian military personnel from the team of marauders of the 92nd brigade, taking advantage of the observance of the ceasefire on our part, began to cut the metal structures of mine equipment near the contact line … as a result, both of them were blown up by a mine,” the DPR People’s Militia said. The incident took place in the city of Avdeevka, in close proximity to the contact line. Later reports claimed that at least four had died.
The Ukrainian side blaimed the death of four Ukrainian soldiers [the same ones who were blown up by a mine, according to the DPR People’s Militia] on actions by members of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). In Donetsk, these statements were called untrue, adding that the incident occurred too far from the contact line, outside the radius of destruction of the republic’s armed forces.
On August 7th, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone, to discuss the situation in the Donbass.
“Today in the morning I spoke with President of Russia Vladimir Putin about this, I called him immediately, I said that this [death of the Ukrainian servicemen in a presumed attack] does not bring us close to peace, I ask you to influence that sides [the fighters in the Donbas] to stop murdering our people,” Zelensky said.
He also noted that they talked about demining of Stanytsia Luhanska and returning of captured Ukrainians. Zelensky commented on Putin’s reaction in brief.
“I tell them that our people are being killed, and I am told that there are some details, where our people shot at civilians,” he said.
Zelensky said that he also raised issues of reducing the time for building a bridge in the region of Luhansk and the topic of the return of Ukrainian prisoners. “We had a long conversation,” he said.
On August 6th, Zelensky called on leaders of Norman-format countries – Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron – to get together as soon as possible in order to conduct negotiations over the situation in the region.
