‘Feels-like’ temps of 113 degrees or higher expected in parts of South Florida on Saturday

An “extreme excessive heat risk” is expected Saturday — with the forecast calling for “feels-like” temperatures of 113 degrees or higher in some parts of South Florida, the National Weather Service says.

The areas most likely to experience these extreme heat index numbers are in central Palm Beach County. The weather service warns that “dangerous and potentially deadly heat stroke is likely with limited exposure,” when heat indices reach these levels.

Heat indices are calculated by combining air temperature and relative humidity.

The remainder of nearly all of both Palm Beach and Broward counties will likely experience “significant excessive heat risk” on Saturday, meaning a heat index of 108-112 degrees, where dangerous and potentially deadly heat stroke is likely with prolonged exposure.

A normal overnight low temperature for May 18 is 74 degrees, according to weather service records, but lows Friday night will remain around 80 degrees, giving Saturday’s heat a head start.

A normal maximum temperature in Fort Lauderdale for May 18 is 86 degrees F, but temperatures will reach 92 to 93 degrees Saturday — hotter than normal maximum temperatures in August (90 degrees).

Sunday will be slightly less hot, with the region experiencing “elevated” heat risk, with potential heat indices of 103 to 107 degrees.
