Foreigner with 2,000 SIM cards detained in Almaty
Tengrinews.kz – Officers from the Department for Combating Cybercrime detained a foreign national in an apartment in Almaty, citing Polisia.kz.
The man is suspected of using criminal equipment for fraudulent purposes.
During a search of the apartment, authorities discovered three SIM-box devices, each containing 32 slots for SIM cards. Additionally, around 2,000 SIM cards from various mobile operators were seized.
"These devices were used to make fraudulent calls to Kazakhstani citizens. It was established that the foreign national arrived in our country in December last year and was maintaining criminal equipment for fraudulent activities. A criminal case has been initiated, and the suspect has been placed in a temporary detention facility," said Zhandos Suyinbai, the head of the Department for Combating Cybercrime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Earlier, police in Pavlodar detained a family of phone scammers. In their rented apartment, authorities found five SIM-box devices, each with eight slots containing SIM cards from Kazakhstani mobile operators.
