Millie Bobby Brown Loved Her ’90s Makeover, Okay?
Earlier this year, Millie Bobby Brown debuted a new look. Suddenly, on the press tour for her ‘90s-set action movie The Electric State, she was wearing her newly platinum blonde hair in Pamela Anderson–inspired updos and pulling outfits straight from the Baywatch star’s own archive. Brown’s transformation, which she later said was inspired by the movie, sparked widespread — and unwelcome — commentary about her appearance, which she responded to by asking her fans to “grow up with me” in an Instagram video. In a new British Vogue cover story, the Stranger Things star said the whole conversation made her “depressed” and left her “crying every day.”
“I respect journalism. I love reading articles on my favourite people and hearing what they’re up to. I understand that there’s paparazzi, even though it’s invasive, even though it feels like shit to me – I know that’s your job,” Brown said. “But don’t, in your headline, slam me at the get-go. It is so wrong and it is bullying, especially to young girls who are new to this industry and are already questioning everything about it.” She added that she’d been excited for the ’90s-inspired press tour, referencing the Anderson closet steals and adding that she borrowed from Paris Hilton, too.
Brown told British Vogue that, in the middle of all the chatter, she ended up crying backstage in London while getting her makeup done before presenting a BRIT Award to Sabrina Carpenter. She said she still had tears in her eyes when she spoke to the singer backstage, and as it turns out, Carpenter is a good person to chat with when dealing with a wave of internet commentary.
“Truly, always, her mentality is very much like ‘Fuck ’em’, which I knew inside of me, but when you hear someone else say it, you’re like, ‘Yes! That’s it,’” Brown recalled. Her chat with Carpenter was the impetus for her Instagram video. “It’s, like, get off my fucking case, you know? I am 21. I am going to have fun and play and be myself,” Brown told the magazine.
Show me a 21-year-old girl who didn’t dye her hair or experiment with a bold lip. Unfortunately for Brown, she had to do it in front of millions of people. She seems to have a healthy perspective on it now, though. And you know what? I thought her blonde bangs were fun!
