The Man Who Accosted Ariana Grande in Singapore Was Charged
The Wicked: For Good premiere in Singapore on Thursday night was meant to be an occasion to rejoicify — until a stunt-happy fan jumped the yellow-carpet barricade and charged at Ariana Grande. In a now-viral video posted to TikTok, an Australian man who later identified himself on Instagram as Johnson Wen grabbed the actress for a moment before Cynthia Erivo and security swooped in to fight him off. Per BBC, Wen was arrested following the event and on Friday afternoon, he was charged with being a public nuisance by a Singapore court. The U.K. outlet reported that Wen, who did not hire representation, intends to plead guilty.
In terms of being a pest to the general public, this isn’t Wen’s first rodeo. The 26-year-old refers to himself as “Troll Most Hated” in his Instagram bio and has posted footage of himself mobbing the Chainsmokers, the Weeknd, and Katy Perry onstage. In a video from Perry’s concert in June, Wen bum-rushes his way onto the stage, while Perry appears visibly shaken and turns her back on him until security forcibly removes him from the stage. Wen’s summary of the incident, according to his Instagram caption, went as follows: “Dear Katy Perry thanks for letting me Dance on Stage ???? you made my Childhood Memmory since 2008 ???? I Dreamed about meeting you!! And now it has happened.” On Thursday, he posted a similarly tone-deaf message alongside footage of him accosting Grande: “Dear Ariana Grande Thank You for letting me Jump on the Yellow Carpet with You ❤️”
If found guilty, Wen could be fined up to $1,540 — or, per CBS, three months in jail. Will he be banned from all Arianator events moving forward? Sounds unlikely. Thank goodness Cynthia Erivo does her own stunts.
