Trump Torches ‘Traitor’ MTG — But Georgia Might Burn Him

In a classic example of an intense relationship gone bad, the steadily unraveling bond between Donald Trump and his once close friend Marjorie Taylor Greene was decisively broken once and for all on November 14 via a presidential proclamation on Truth Social.

It’s a long post, but it should be read in its entirety to grasp the absolute nature of this excommunication from the MAGA community (I did replace a long ritualistic list of the president’s vast accomplishments with an ellipsis since we’ve all read it many times before):

I am withdrawing my support and Endorsement of “Congresswoman” Marjorie Taylor Greene, of the Great State of Georgia. Over the past few weeks, despite my creating Record Achievements for our Country. … all I see “Wacky” Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN! It seemed to all begin when I sent her a Poll stating that she should not run for Senator, or Governor, she was at 12%, and didn’t have a chance (unless, of course, she had my Endorsement — which she wasn’t about to get!). She has told many people that she is upset that I don’t return her phone calls anymore, but with 219 Congressmen/women, 53 U.S. Senators, 24 Cabinet Members, almost 200 Countries, and an otherwise normal life to lead, I can’t take a ranting Lunatic’s call every day. I understand that wonderful, Conservative people are thinking about primarying Marjorie in her District of Georgia, that they too are fed up with her and her antics and, if the right person runs, they will have my Complete and Unyielding Support. She has gone Far Left, even doing The View, with their Low IQ Republican hating Anchors. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Later, in another post, Trump went from attacking Greene to insulting her with a new nickname:

Wacky Marjorie “Traitor” Brown (Remember, Green turns to Brown where there is ROT involved!) is working overtime to try and portray herself as a victim when, in actuality, she is the cause of all of her own problems. The fact is, nobody cares about this Traitor to our Country!

Greene has indeed expressed not just hurt feelings but real fear at being targeted for political extinction by “the most powerful man in the world.” She wrote, in part, on X:

The man I supported and helped get elected.

Aggressive rhetoric attacking me has historically led to death threats and multiple convictions of men who were radicalized by the same type of rhetoric being directed at me right now.

This time by the President of the United States.

As a woman I take threats from men seriously.

I now have a small understanding of the fear and pressure the women, who are victims of Jeffrey Epstein and his cabal, must feel.

MTG’s outspoken support for the discharge petition on a bill that would force disclosure of the Epstein files was likely the breaking point with Trump (this was before the president reversed course abruptly and supported the discharge petition himself). But she has been distancing herself from Trumpworld for a while. She’s criticized Trump for his alleged abandonment of “America First” principles in foreign policy (particularly with respect to Israel’s war in Gaza); for supporting H-1B visas; and, most powerfully, for failing to deal with the spiking health-care premiums caused by the coming expiration of Obamacare subsidies.

But she can and surely will make the case that Trump’s the traitor to the MAGA movement, not her. It’s not as if she has been getting all that cozy with Democrats (though she has expressed regrets about the ferocity of her political messaging in the past), and several of her lines of criticism of the Trump administration reflect regular grumblings from the MAGA rank and file (particularly the Epstein files and Trump’s incessant globe-trotting).

The more important practical question is how deeply Trump is committed to the primary challenge to Greene he invited in his breakup post.

Ever since she parachuted into northwest Georgia (she had been living in the north-Atlanta suburbs) to win a heavily Republican open congressional seat in 2020 with a combination of personal wealth and right-wing notoriety (she was notoriously friendly with devotees of the QAnon conspiracy theory), Greene has built a strong power base on her home turf. Her national fame has made her an extraordinary fundraiser but also a money magnet for hapless Democratic general-election opponents. Since she has never had to worry about any threat to her right, it’s unclear how much traction a primary challenger would get. Three names are already surfacing, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and a couple of them are real howlers:

Republican state Sen. Colton Moore, whose views are so extreme he was ousted from the Senate GOP caucus, and Dr. John Cowan, a neurosurgeon who lost to Greene in 2020, are each considering runs.

And far-right commentator Laura Loomer, a frequent Greene antagonist, publicly floated moving to Georgia to challenge her.

As noted above, Moore was suspended in 2023 from his own party’s caucus for intemperate comments about colleagues and then banned from the floor of the Georgia House in 2024 for making charges of corruption against the recently deceased Speaker of that chamber. He was subsequently arrested in early 2025 when he showed up for a joint legislative session. He’s still out on bail. He is indeed a fiery MAGA dude — but one with a record of electoral success despite the disdain of his colleagues.

Though vastly more famous, Loomer has not had electoral success, having lost twice (once in a 2020 general election and then again in a 2022 primary) in Florida congressional bids. While she used to be known mostly for rabid Islamophobia, she has emerged in the second Trump administration as a holy terror of a “MAGA influencer,” famous for instigating and pursuing purges of Republican appointees with backgrounds she considers suspect. She has also carried on a particularly vicious campaign of vilification against MTG, apparently triggered by Greene’s criticism of Israel. Here’s a sample:

It’s likely she’s just trolling MTG by talking of moving to Georgia to take out her bitter enemy, but it would be the primary of the century.

Trump has another problem to ponder other than which wild extremist to back against Greene: His track record in purging Georgia Republicans who have displeased him is particularly bad. After Georgia governor Brian Kemp and secretary of state Brad Raffensperger certified Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state, Trump vowed vengeance. In 2022, he recruited a former U.S. senator (David Perdue) to challenge Kemp and a sitting congressman (Jody Hice) to get rid of Raffensperger. Trump’s candidates got trounced. Does the president really want to meddle in Georgia Republican politics again?
