A Christian Momfluencer Found Wicked: For Good Way Too Sexy
If you’re at all familiar with Wicked, you probably know that things get very briefly sexy during the musical’s second act. In the stage musical, “As Long As You’re Mine” is a heated moment — Elphaba and Fiyero abscond to the woods, where they finally confess their feelings for each other and get to doing it right there on the forest floor, in what has become a memorable scene for our nation’s horniest theater kids. But in the movie? Well … it’s not quite as steamy. The two are only seen in bed for a fleeting moment, and during that moment, Elphaba is wearing the biggest, rattiest cardigan you’ve ever seen in your life.
But apparently that was still too pervy for Christian momfluencer Sara Burnett. On Sunday, Burnett — who calls herself a “virtual hope spreader” in her Instagram bio — posted a video from her car, where she sipped from a Stanley cup and explained that she walked out of a screening of the movie with her kids. Apparently, Burnett took issue with the risqué nature of “As Long As You’re Mine” (during which, again, Elphaba is wearing a knitwear item that would make Eileen Fisher separates look skanky). Burnett said she would not allow her kids “to watch scenes where men are sexually taking off women’s clothing and music that is talking about them laying in bed together.”
Burnett also took issue with the spells in the movie, which she said she believes “weren’t just some made up words … They had purpose in them!” It’s unclear what dark magic Burnett thinks Wicked lyricist Stephen Schwartz is capable of wielding, but apparently it was enough to prompt her to leave the movie theater. “The Bible tells us to stay far away from that and my children even looked at me with big eyes and felt uncomfortable in certain parts of the movie,” she wrote. “The mom gut knew it was time to walk out.”
Burnett’s comments section is full of fellow Christian moms supporting her decision to listen to that “momma gut feeling.” Others are scandalized that she would even bring her children to a PG movie in the first place. On the other end of the spectrum, some commenters can agree that this is all very silly. “Girl pls go outside and touch some grass, nobody is performing spells on you,” one person wrote.
This isn’t the first time Wicked has pissed off conservative moms. Last year, when the first movie came out, thousands of them called for a boycott because they thought the movie was “pushing the LGBTQ agenda.” There are no ostensibly queer romances in the plot of Wicked (unless you’re a Gelphie shipper), but apparently their issue was that several of the cast members are part of the LGBTQ+ community. “Instead of an uplifting Broadway musical about friendship and family, talents and resources were used to create a dark movie that also pushes wokeness,” the petition stated. It’s literally a musical about fighting fascism, but sure!
