Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau Are Doing Diplomacy Together
Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau’s relationship seems to be getting serious, but just how serious? Last month, a source told People that the couple was “making plans for the holidays.” That sounds like things are getting pretty real for them, especially considering their first public outing was only in July. But of course, that’s just an anonymous source speaking to a tabloid. It would be good to get an update from a real person, one whose word carries weight and who has no incentive to put any spin on the story. Perhaps — and I’m just spitballing here — someone like former Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida?
We’re in luck! On Thursday, Kishida actually did give us an update on the couple, in his own way. Trudeau and Perry have been in Japan this week for her Lifetimes tour, and after taking in a sumo-wrestling show earlier in the week, they had lunch with Kishida and his wife, Yuko, on Thursday. So, to answer our initial question, these two are serious enough that they are doing international diplomacy together.
In another helpful indicator of where they’re at, Kishida shared a photo of the couples together following their meeting, where he referred to Perry as Trudeau’s “partner.” He also appreciates his lasting friendship with the former Canadian PM, but that is of less importance to our inquiry.

総理時代には首相同士何度もお会いし、カナダ訪問時には「日加アクションプラン」の策定など、二国間関係強化に共に汗をかいた仲です。

Now that mingling with dignitaries is on the table for these two, there is a whole new world of possibilities available to them. The Lifetimes tour is wrapping up next week, at which point Perry will have much more time to be a politician’s partner. I’d love to see them catching up with the Obamas in the New Year.
