UGS passes bill to confirm Nomination Commission nominees

0

At their meeting on Wednesday, the Undergraduate Senate (UGS) voted to pass the Joint Bill to Confirm Nominees to the Nomination Commission (NomCom). The bill will confirm six nominees to the NomCom, which appoints students to University committees and which has been vacant since last school year. These nominees were all interviewed and selected by members of the UGS.

For this bill to go into effect, it must be passed by both the UGS and the Graduate Student Council (GSC). The GSC will vote on the bill at its meeting on Oct. 23.

Besides this bill, the UGS introduced two bills which will be voted on during next Wednesday’s meeting. The Joint Bill to Confirm New Student OCS Panelists would confirm 49 student panelists to help review Office of Community Standards (OCS) cases. Currently, there are seven student panelists, all confirmed last week. This bill would greatly increase the number of students available to work with the OCS.

“There are 500 cases that need to be dealt with and only seven students there to act as jurists … to these panels,” UGS Chair David Sengthay ’26 said.

Next, the UGS introduced the Bill to Allocate Funds to the First-Generation and/or Low-Income Partnership (FLIP) for First-Gen Week Programming, which would appropriate funds for the event, which begins Nov. 3.

“The requested $2,000 would go towards immediate and modest needs not already covered by the existing funds,” UGS Deputy Chair Minji Cho ’28 said. “This could include things like venue, event services, accessibility support, non-alcoholic food and drinks and outreach materials such as shirts, stickers, tote bags to promote community pride during the week.”

The UGS approved other funding requests as recommended by the Appropriations Committee, allocating nearly $22,000 to student groups.

Additionally, the UGS unanimously approved Sengthay’s request to send an email to the undergraduate student mailing list providing resources and support in light of recent reports that federal border agents are set to arrive in the Bay Area tomorrow.

“I believe it is in our best interest to support this community,” Sengthay said, referring to undocumented and mixed-status individuals. “Not necessarily take a stance and say whether or not this is the correct action, but just say that because students are being impacted by these changes and we are within a 40-mile radius of the San Francisco area, it is in — I believe — our best interest to provide resources to anybody that may need it.”
