The study snacks that fuel The Daily
“Anything from an on-call” — Chloe Wong ’28
There’s no better feeling than getting that 9 p.m. Friday/Saturday night Slack message: “Free pizza/mochinuts/Domino’s in the lounge. Get it while it lasts!” Heading into midterms season, even the trek to the dining hall feels too far… and the convenience of an on-call is too good to deny.
“Pomegranates from home” — Dan Kubota ’27
When my grandma comes to visit me (usually with one of my aunts or my mom in tow), she bestows a plethora of gifts: Bounty paper towels, Halls cough drops and pomegranates from the tree in her driveway.
The fruits of her labor, guarded from thieving squirrels by layers of newspaper and shiny CDs that twinkle in the sunlight, are gifted to me with a note in her loopy handwriting, signed with love, and now sit in my dinged-up mini fridge. I had one last night and let me tell you — it was absolutely magical.
The sweet stickiness lingers in my mind — and as bright red stains on my white sweater (absolutely worth it). Each seed is a burst of flavor in your mouth. The muted crunch of the seed, the explosions of flavor and cold, refreshing juice pair together for a delicious, nostalgia-inducing snack.
Pocky — Tanya Rastogi ’29
There are few things more agonizing than trying to chew inconspicuously in a quiet classroom or making a desperate attempt to keep your hands crumb-free around papers and devices. Whether you suffer from late-night hunger pangs, can’t eat lunch because of your schedule or want to stress-eat your emotions away, Pocky is the ideal pick.
Let me explain: they’re crunchy but not as loud as chips, they taste sweet enough to sweeten your tired soul and they are packaged upside-down so your fingers don’t get covered in chocolate. Next time you sneak food into lecture or find yourself hunched in front of your laptop at 2 a.m., reach for a pack of Pocky!
Crunchy Curls — Sharis Hsu ’28
A new snack I recently tried at my lab, these have become a favorite in my rotation of Trader Joe’s goodies. Fairly bland, fairly colorless and fairly low calorie, Crunchy Curls are the perfect background snack for a study session. These lentil-potato-based snacks are not too exciting to draw your attention away from the task at hand but just exciting enough to reach for.
Cotton candy grapes — Emerson Prentice ’29
There is something insanely addicting and meditative about popping these sweet grapes into my mouth as I type. Every few sentences I give myself one as a little reward for all the hard work I have done, and I swear it makes my writing go by much faster (and tastier).
