Dane Scarlett endured a difficult time on loan at Ipswich Town in the first half of this season, but the Spurs youngster fared a little better during his time at Portsmouth last season. Simon Bassey, his coach at the time, has commented on what he saw in Scarlett and what his future might hold.
After emerging from the Tottenham academy and making his first-team debut under Jose Mourinho, many expected Dane Scarlett‘s career to take off. Sadly, that hasn’t quite happened yet, with the 19-year-old having ventured away over the last couple of years to gain experience.
A spell with Portsmouth in the 2022/23 campaign saw Scarlett bag six goals and two assists for the League One side (Transfermarkt).
This season, however, Scarlett joined Ipswich Town, and the Championship newcomers clearly had very little need for his contributions as they battled at the top of the league. The youngster was given just 12 appearances and 145 minutes of action for the Tractor Boys (Transfermarkt).
He has since returned to Tottenham and will be utilised by Ange Postecoglou in the first-team for the rest of the year.

Dane Scarlett can learn from his struggles
Speaking to The Portsmouth News, former Pompey boss Simon Bassey has touched on why Scarlett’s struggles will serve him well in the future.
He said: “A good kid, but young and still had a lot to do. He’s a brilliant presser, his great attribute is pressing against the ball, so I wanted to see whether he could do that role off the left, coming in on his right foot and shooting.
“It doesn’t always happen in straight lines for these kids. Sometimes, failure is good for them. These top academies are full of people telling you how well you are doing, and they protect them from the realities of football. The realities are sometimes you fail. So how do you come back from that?
“It can shape your career. It’s what you do when that failure comes which determines how you go in the future. I am sure Dane is going to be a good player. I wish him well. Some of them find their level and only time tells when that is.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Dane Scarlett is still so young and he has so much potential. A couple of loan spells will not determine how his career plays out, and I’m confident he will prove himself at Spurs in good time. Let’s not forget what Harry Kane‘s career started like.
