Regardless of Tottenham’s continued interest in Conor Gallagher, and Chelsea’s need to sell players, the midfielder is thought to be determined to stay with his boyhood club even though there is little progress in negotiating a new contract with the Blues.
Spurs have been tracking Gallagher for the best part of a year now, having first been linked with the England international last summer.
It is well documented that Ange Postecoglou is keen to add a new midfielder to his ranks and upgrade his options in the middle of the park, and Gallagher is seen as the ideal fit for the Australian’s system.
The only problem is, Gallagher has been in terrific form for Mauricio Pochettino‘s side this season, registering four goals and six assists in 35 appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt) and has even captained the team in Reece James’ absence.
Gallagher himself has even told Sky Sports recently that ‘the plan’ is for him to sign a new contract with Chelsea, as his current deal expires at the end of next season.
Gallagher wants a new contract at Chelsea
The latest update from the Daily Mail reiterates Gallagher’s desire to stay put, but reveals that little progress is being made in getting a new contract at this stage.
It is thought Gallagher is “determined to fight for his long-term future” at Chelsea, but the two parties have reached an “impasse” when it comes to contract negotiations. Apparently, “no significant progress” has been made on the new deal so far.
Tottenham and other Premier League clubs are known to be “monitoring the situation closely” ahead of the summer, but Gallagher is “still to seriously contemplate a move away” from his boyhood club.
The issue is, Chelsea are reluctant to break their self-imposed limit of £150,000 per week wages, but the idea of selling one of their star players is seen as a “peculiar” move for the Blues, regardless of the pressure they may feel from Financial Fair Play regulations.
Spurs Web Opinion
I’m really not sure why we are pursuing this so intensely. Conor Gallagher clearly doesn’t want to leave Chelsea, and until he gives a surefire sign that he does, we should be exploring other options.
