Ange Postecoglou says Dane Scarlett has impressed in training recently, remarking that the door is always open for the striker to get first-team minutes this season.
While Scarlett was seen as the academy prospect who was the closest to becoming a first-team regular until 18 months ago, the teenager’s stock has fallen since and he has arguably been overtaken by the likes of Jamie Donley and Alfie Devine.
The striker failed to hit the expected heights at Portsmouth in League One last season and he did not make a single start for Ipswich Town in the Championship during the first half of this campaign.
Tottenham thus decided to recall the youngster in January and the fact that he has represented the Lilywhites in the Carabao Cup meant that he could not be loaned out again, with the rules not permitting players to play for three different English clubs in the same season.
Dane Scarlett waits for his Tottenham chance
Scarlett has struggled to get minutes for the senior senior side since returning to Hotspur Way but has featured for the Under-21s recently.
When asked if the door is open for the striker to play for the first team, Postecoglou said on Friday (via Beanyman Sports): “The door is never closed. He trains with us every day.
“For all the players, they are all in the same boat, that door is always open. If you are waiting for some secret magic door to open that doesn’t exist.
“The door is always open, they have an opportunity every day to put themselves in front of me and the coaches and make an impact and wait for their opportunity.
“Dane has had a difficult season but it’s great we got him some game time with the Under-21s. That was important as if you look at the match minutes he has played it’s way too low. That has helped him and he has trained well this week.”

With Alejo Veliz and Will Lankshear now also knocking on the door and with Jamie Donley demonstrating that he can operate as a striker, Scarlett has his work cut out if he wants to become a fixture in the senior set-up.
However, he is only 19 years of age and Tottenham will certainly want to persist with him as some are more late bloomers than others.
